Dark Castle Lords
Axton Bealman was a womanizing rake who took sixteen year-old Iona’s virginity and didn’t even remember it. Iona’s life and circumstances changed drastically after that incident. She has endured seven very difficult years but now finds herself employed as a nanny to Axton’s daughter. She is finally in a position to gain retribution for his mistreatment of her. Why is she so reluctant to enact her revenge?
Iona is very impressive woman. She has faced many hardships as a result of Axton’s callous actions and the loss of her family home. Although she has been mistreated, Iona retains a gentle spirit and a strong will. The author has truly created a wonderful character. Axton, on the the other hand, seemed one-dimensional and I was unable to connect to him. His life was also difficult but he just came across as a selfish, angry man. His behavior toward Iona was despicable and his remorse did not seem genuine. The secondary characters were not very likable either.
The book began very promisingly but I had a difficult time maintaining a sense of realism as it progressed. Individually, some of the scenes were touching and well done, but they didn’t seem to flow smoothly from one to the other. That said, I did enjoy the story and would recommend it to those who like historical romance – perfect for a rainy Sunday afternoon.
