Mitchell Donovan is an FBI agent who has returned to his hometown after fifteen years away to capture a mob boss he’s been after for years. Working undercover as a detective, he finds more than he bargained for when he runs into the woman he left behind and finds out he’s the father of her kidnapped daughter. Leaning on Mitchell during a crisis is something Katherine Delaney never thought she’d be doing. But the comfort of having his arms around her and someone to share the worry with are enough to kindle the sparks she thought died when he left.

This book jumps right into the action by starting with Mitchell and Katherine’s reunion as she’s being loaded into an ambulance after being run off the road. Seeing her again, even banged up from the accident, was enough for him to know that there was still a connection between them. Likewise, Katherine feels a spark whenever she’s around Mitchell, and though she’s wary and distrustful of him in the beginning, she succumbs to her feelings for him. His tender treatment of her throughout the story shows just how important she is to him and how much he wants to make the most of their second chance. And the fact that Katherine continues to turn to him when things look bleak while they search for their daughter highlights the fact that she’s willing to forgive him for the past and look forward to a future together.

Between the investigation into the criminal activities in the story and the burgeoning relationship between Mitchell and Katherine, there is never a dull moment in this book. And though some of the circumstances and events in this book seem contrived, the characters are fairly relatable. This is a fairly quick read with some interesting twists that will keep readers turning pages until the satisfying conclusion
